CAC Repeater Update
On Saturday, May 6, Chris, W7CGC, and I met Paul, KE7NEA out at the CAC Maricopa campus where our repeater is housed. The mission was to prefield our upcoming antenna installation and gather whatever tools are needed. Paul is a certified tower climber who works with the Arizona Repeater Association.

Here is a picture of the tower, which is 100 feet.

On close examination with binoculars and my 70-300mm camera lens, we discovered that the coax had been cut. Here is a picture of the coax.

When we placed the equipment a few weeks ago, the SWR was measuring 1.3:1. However, the signals just didn't seem to be getting out, even on a handheld directly under the tower. So, our of caution, we powered everything down until we could get back out and further investigate. It turns out that had we left the repeater on, it wouldn't have lasted very long until the PA stage went south.

We don't need a whole lot more to get the antenna and feed line installed. We want to round up a gin pole to help move equipment up the tower. We have most of the miscellaneous pieces that we will need for the hookup, with the exception of a few coax jumpers to go between the hardline and the antennas. Needless to say, it's important to have everything necessary before the climb takes place or it has to be done all over again.

Our next step is to coordinate a Saturday with the college for installation. Our climbers have weekday jobs so weekends are a must. I've sent messages to the college to schedule a Saturday, early in the morning to avoid winds and heat.

Once we have a schedule, we will be seeking volunteers for the ground crew to help get tools and parts to the climbers.
